Cheapest Months to Visit San Diego (and When to Avoid)

San Diego's near-perfect weather is also its catch: because it's pleasant almost year-round, demand — and airfare into San Diego International (SAN) — rarely drops the way it does in colder cities. But there are clear cheaper windows if you know when to look. Here's the month-by-month picture.

The short answer

The cheapest time to fly to San Diego is generally mid-January through February, with a second softer window from late September into early December (skipping Thanksgiving week). The priciest stretches are summer — especially around Comic-Con in July — and the late-December holidays.

Watch the events calendar. San Diego hotels and flights spike around big conventions (Comic-Con in July is the famous one). If you're not coming for the event, avoid those exact dates and you'll pay far less.

What you trade off in the cheap months

The good news for San Diego: even its "off" season is mild. January and February average highs in the mid-60s°F — cool for the beach, perfect for the zoo, Balboa Park, and walking the city. You're trading peak beach weather for noticeably lower fares and thinner crowds, not trading away the trip.
